State of the Art Analysis of ITS designated priorities/services
There have been a number of ITS architecture initiatives in Europe that have been implemented in the last 20 years. Some have been very successful, others have not and others have yet to complete their work. This Activity will review available information concerning ITS architecture activities across European Member States, including the Norwegian ARKTRANS Architecture. The approach to be followed will entail the critical assessment of the existing ITS architectures actually implemented, taking into account local, regional and national constraints. It is intended that this activity will highlight anything that will be of use, or is in some way relevant to the work of this FRAME NEXT project in the continued evolution of the FRAME Architecture.
Evolution of European ITS Framework Architecture
In order that ITS Services can be provided in a coherent manner, it is necessary that they conform to a coherent set of views. These views cover aspects such as strategy, business, information and application, technology, etc. in the form of architectures. The term ‘architecture’, or structure, can be applied at a number of different levels of abstraction, and an approach to bring them all together is shown in the diagram below. It should be noted that, whilst technology is normally the domain of the implementers and thus not part of a FRAME-based architecture, there may be occasions (e.g. in European regulations, or stakeholder agreements) where choices need to be defined at that level.
Improvement of architecture tools and materials
The FRAME Architecture needs to continue to be relevant to the continual evolution of ITS services and to be available through tools that provide a modern user experience. This Work Package will update and develop the existing tools to reflect changes in the content of ITS services the Architecture supports and provide improved and more sustainable methods of maintaining the Architecture. In addition the materials used to promote and support the use of the FRAME Architecture will be refined and improved to keep pace with the ways that such materials are used in today’s world.
Stakeholder involvement and interaction
The objective of this work package is to gather and maintain a community of stakeholders, supporting the evolution and use of ITS Architecture; to learn stakeholders’ experience in implementing ITS and to derive user needs and requirements for the evolution and application of the European ITS Framework Architecture; to share knowledge about the FRAME approach and to harmonize national and FRAME approaches.
It is crucial in order for the FRAME Architecture to be effective, that stakeholders’ actual needs are taken on board and actual ITS deployments and plans are reflected in the evolution of the FRAME Architecture. Also achieving stakeholder buy in of this approach will be important. Therefore stakeholder involvement will be organised. This will be done through one overarching activity.
